Sugarloaf mtn in blooming spring mode : More exploration. Al, Day, Brother Jon and myself rode all over Sugarloaf this morning and didn't end up where we expected, but made it to a good place. That's the way it goes. And in the nick of time, Stage 1 of the Giro is set. Or is it? Lots of spring time bloomers out this morning.

GA tour 2006 : The Grand Tour season ended with the Fall Georgia Tour. A 4 day point-to-point *epic* dirt adventure. Highlights include:
1) Being a part of Team RV's domination (results at http://geocities.com/rootsurfing/)
2) The super sweet, rockless, flowy, leafy singletrack north GA has to offer
3) Killer accomodations along the way (inside and out of Team RV headquarters)
4) Seeing a military transport plane buzz the tree tops below our perch on Rabun Bald
5) Riding in an 'I love Jesus' tie and wearing a crown whenever not on the bike
6) Having a solid and stoked butler shuttling Team headquarters along the route - gracias Sean
7) Belgian Ale for the day's victor
8) Standing all alone on top of Glassy Mtn

Thanks to all the Athens Crew (and ex-pats) for putting on such an awesome event. Looking forward to next year already.

Big Ride around Reddish, July 06 : The humidity was oppressive today. A big group of 10 of us headed out from the Lynn Trail parking area up the road to Flagpole Knob. Eduardo was with us from the start. We had to buschwhack to the Red Diamond trail head and once past the thick briers up top it was screaming fast to the bottom. We rolled past Hone Quarry to the campground, had a short discussion with a concerned but misinformed camper about wether or not bikes were allowed on these trails and then headed up a very slick Heartbreak Trail - traction was a nish nish. Short Hone Quarry Ridge was drier and we could finally grab some trail and then we dropped down Short Hone Quarry to a fatty lunch at the cars. With grotesquely overstuffed bellies we headed up Lynn Trail (Eric cleaned the mug). Here's where the group began to splinter. At the top of Lynn, Kinley and krew headed out Wolfe Ridge, Day napped in some moss, and Eric, Jay and myself continued up Lynn to Timber ridge. We headed south and bore right onto Hearthstone for 3-4 miles of DH to Tillman Road and then back to the car. 7.5 slow hours and 2 jerseys later it was time to get back to Charlottesville for the freak show Wunderkammer - Gonna need a Sparks.

Stokesville-Douthat-Stokedville : This ride made me realize that what we have right here in Virginia's National Forests is the best there is. We must have ridden 60+ miles of ridge in 2 days. 16 strong rolled out at 5:50 on saturday morning for what would be the fisrt climb of an epic journey. Dowell's Draft was the first of many downhill gems. After a re-coffee at Carpenter's convenienc Trish destroyed us going up to Confederate breastworks. The SMT was rolling, I blew myself out about halfway through. Lunch. Then the long climb up Little Mare was like a dream with the brushwork done last year and the descent off Brushy filled our lungs and eyeballs with pollen. Then we entered the promised land of Douthat State Park and rolled some of the smoothest trails in VA. The arrival at the cabin couldn't have come any sooner - 14+ hours later. Kari's lasagne was out of this world and then bo-beddy-bye time. Sunday dawned, grab some fresh coffee, wait for Hurley and then bonk on the first climb. Beards Mtn on the way out of Douthat was incredible - exposed western style ridges all morning. After the long road transfer and lunch stop we started up Elliot's - the sign said 11 miles to the knob and it was all uphill. The descent was dusted with pea sized hail making the already treacherous rocky downhill shadier for my bruised and delirious self. The hike-a-bikes up Crawford caused uncontrollable laughter and tears then a rippin time down Chimney Hollow. We stuck together up the last climb, Dowells, and from there I was running on stoke - put it in the big ring and let the suspension work. We raced the daylight back to Stokesville and barely made it down in time. Holy shiza that was a long weekend of riding. 26+ hours total saddle time. Phenomenal route, even better crew (including all of our support - Kari, Lindsay, Megan, Susan, and Bender) made for an unforgettable tour --- Do-that-stoked06

Whetstone Trailwork Weekend : In a classic east meets west effort, members of CAMBC and SMBC tag-teamed Whetstone Ridge this past weekend. A crew of 18 assembled on the parkway on saturday morning and loaded up the BOB trailers for what would be a long day on the trail. We pedaled 4 brushers in about 5 miles then began clearing the trail and hand raking the spoils to open up one of the nicest ridges, as one maintainer put it, in the world. 11 hours later we emerged, got a ride back to the top and set up camp in the dark at Montebello Campground and ate a hearty meal of everything in sight. We also learned that twizzler ropes don't burn, they blister in the fire and then char. Sunday morning we struggled to pull it together before noon and finally sampled the fruits of our labor. The ladies rolled out of the parking lot while the guys had a string of mechanicals to start the day. Ohhhh, and then the ridge - phenomenal - with the road ride back up the 11 mile road in 46 degree rain the last nail in the coffin. When all was said and done I felt like the bare knuckles midget boxing champ had worked out on my hamstrings like they were his speedbag.

Harris-Roubaix 2006 : Man that was a tough race. I popped right before the finish, limped up the last climb. Trevor and Joel had already ridden away with the win on the tandem destroyer - they rode everyone off their wheel on the first climb and were not to be seen again. Huffy and Chris Scott were the last to try and hang on but eventually they succumbed to the two horsepower engine and we swept them up near the end of the 1st lap. Me, Day, Andy K and Andy Rhodes, Christian, and Geoff Kabush-look-alike Nick from SC. The second lap started with the same 4-5 mile gravel climb (rolling) and I pushed it trying to drop some folks off but only managed to dump Christian - unfortunately, I wanted him to stick around, we play well together. Day was riding strong on the flats and downhills, pushing it. And Andy Rhodes was killing it on the flats and into the wind. Huffy routinely checked out the comp - glancing back over his shoulder, making little spurts. I popped about 1/2 way through the last lap - strung off the back through the rolly section but managed to bridge back up to the lead group of one-person-per-bike riders (Joel and Trevor were enjoying wine and cheese by this point) - Paul Johnston pulled me along the short section of 42 in the last miles to get back up to the lead crew. And then the final gravel climb, within the last mile - Huffy jumped! Geoff Kabush followed, Chris Scott mumbled something and the Andy's dug deep. I was fried, I watched Day pedal away from me at a leisurely pace. Huffy ended up beating Geoff for the 3rd place finish, I trickled in 9th... and was cooked. Sean Q came down and had a blast - caught the bug. Carp ruled the fixies beating Buck and Thomas, but Buck did ride with fenders and a rack. And Eric was strong enough to hang with those guys the whole race.

Finish
1 Joel
2 Trevor, just behind him
3 Huffy
4 Geoff Kabush
567 Andy Andy ChrisScott (order unknown)
8 Day
9 Tino
10,11 Christian Tom Miller (order unknown)

Woodstock Tower Ridge 3-26-06 : The ridge south of Woodstock Tower Road is... (h)arduous. It's a rock garden/ridge that's about 6 miles long - you've got to be on your game pretty much the whole time. The descent off Waonaze Peak to the bottom is a playground. Then we climbed a super dry ATV/Jeep trail (FR455) and rode along an even rockier ridge past Opechee Peak, through Galldays Gap and Walters Gap and limped back to the car for coldies. ~20 miles and 5 hours later I was ready for a mud pie blizzard from the DQ in Elkton.

Whetstone Ridge 3-18-06 : Whetstone Ridge - an ~10 mile knife ridge off the Blue Ridge Parkway, a righteous ridge by all accounts. Day, Andy, Thomas, and myself rode it on March 18th, a birthday ride of sorts for the mart-dog, and we were all blown away by the technical lines, knife ridge sections, and a crystal clear blue sky. We also maintained the shiza out of the trail - pocket sawed some BIG trees, Iwo Jima'd the leaners, and perfected our slide technique to where the trail is 99% rideable. 5.5 hours later we were back at the car after a gravel road valley ride that climbed us to the parkway. Killer ride - get out there and git yoself some of this one.

North Fork Mountain 10/23/05 : the Shuttle hooked this ride up - it cut out three hours of road but I felt like I was cheating after a 1/4 mile climb dumped us on 12 miles of picturesque ridge with en fuego maples abounding. Lookin down on Seneca Rocks put it in perspective. The final descent to the potomac river was the most ridiculously fun downhill I've ridden yet. Jeremiah's cell phone reception on the ridge was spotty at best.

The Hundred Miler - September 4th, 2005 : It began with a ride down Grindstone on Saturday afternoon that put the pep back in O-dog's step - he needed some GW trail bad. The race was unbelievably fast from the gun with Jaimee passing the the motorcycle and Buschi winning the first two priems - the Narrowback and Wolfe Ridge descents. I caught up with Buschi at about 30 miles and we rode together (he pulled me along) until mile 75ish - he wanted some Garth. I entered damage control zone. Downhilling into Stokesville was euphoric and then the debauchery started. Fantytown came alive with tight pants, some Crown Royal, a new fire ring, and of course, some Jay-Z. A perfect end to a perfect day.
